You're Not Alone in This

The weight of the role doesn't always lift when the shift ends. These are some of the things people in first-responder and high-stress work bring in:

Calls that don't leave when the shift ends — a scene, a face, a sound that comes back — intrusive images, sleep disruption, hypervigilance long after debrief
Emotional numbing or disconnection — going through the motions, detaching from people you love, or noticing you feel less than you used to
Cumulative stress from the role itself — the weight of responsibility, high-stakes decisions, and exposure over months and years — not any single incident
Pressure to stay “fine” — worrying that admitting struggle means you can't do the job, or that seeking help will be seen by colleagues

OUR APPROACH

Person-Centered, Trauma-Informed, Paced to You

Teanna's approach is grounded in person-centered and trauma-informed principles, emphasizing empathy, authenticity, and collaboration.

She works alongside clients to build self-awareness, strengthen resilience, and support meaningful personal growth at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

Her calm, grounded presence comes in part from her own prior work in first-responder roles — she has a real-world understanding of how stress, trauma exposure, and responsibility affect mental health.

What that looks like:

  • Person-centered therapy — you lead; the work follows what matters most to you
  • Trauma-informed care — consent-based, no pressure to disclose before you're ready
  • Cumulative-stress lens — the weight of the role, not just a single incident
  • Resilience & growth focus — not just reducing symptoms; building what's underneath

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a first responder to see Teanna?

No. Teanna welcomes clients from all backgrounds. Her lived experience as a first responder gives her particular insight into high-stress roles, trauma exposure, and cumulative stress — but her approach works for anyone navigating demanding life circumstances.

Is what I tell Teanna confidential — especially given I work in public safety?

Yes. Therapy is confidential within the standard legal limits (imminent risk of harm, child abuse disclosure, or court order). Teanna is completing her practicum under clinical supervision, which means a supervisor reviews case material to support quality of care; supervisors are held to the same confidentiality standards.

What does “person-centered and trauma-informed” mean in practice?

It means you set the direction and the pace. Teanna won't push you to revisit anything before you're ready. The work is collaborative — focused on building self-awareness, resilience, and growth at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

Do you work with families of first responders?

Reach out and we can talk about fit. Teanna's primary focus is on the individuals in high-stress roles, but the rest of the Bridge for Families team works extensively with partners and families who are affected by their loved one's work.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

Most extended healthcare plans cover therapy, including Blue Cross, Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, and Veterans Affairs (VAC). First responders often have strong mental health coverage through their employer — check your plan for coverage of psychotherapy or a Registered Psychotherapist.

What's the difference between an operational stress injury and PTSD?

Operational stress injury (OSI) is a broad term for any persistent psychological difficulty resulting from operational duties — it includes diagnosed conditions like PTSD, but also depression, anxiety, moral injury, and the slow grind of cumulative stress that never meets a formal diagnosis. You don't need a PTSD diagnosis, or any diagnosis, to come in. Teanna works with the full range of OSI presentations, from a single critical incident to years of accumulated exposure.

Can therapy work around my shift schedule and rotations?

Yes. Booking is self-serve through our online portal, so you can grab a session that fits around platoons, nights, or unpredictable rotations rather than committing to the same weekly slot. Sessions are available virtually across Ontario, which means you can attend from home on a day off or while posted away from Ottawa. If your roster changes, you reschedule directly in the portal — no phone tag required.

Will my employer, service, or chain of command find out I'm in therapy?

No. Your sessions are private and are not reported to your service, union, or chain of command. Confidentiality holds within the standard legal limits (imminent risk of harm to self or others, suspected child abuse, or a court order), and those limits are explained up front. If you're using an employer benefit or EFAP to pay, the insurer sees billing information only — not what you discuss in the room.
