WHY BFF

A Different Way to Find a Therapist

Most clinics give you a wait list and a single name. We give you a team — six therapists with different specialties and different approaches, working under one roof.

Our circle of care approach means if one therapist isn't the right fit, or your needs evolve, you can move within the team. If you and your partner both need support, or your teen needs their own person, we coordinate care so nothing is missed.

No wait list. Free 20-minute consultations available with most therapists. Most extended health plans cover sessions.

What you can count on:

  • No wait list — start within days, not months
  • Free 20-min consultations — see if it's a fit before committing
  • Six therapists, different lanes — match the issue to the right person
  • Insurance coverage — most extended health plans reimburse
  • In-person or virtual — Kanata clinic or secure video

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a structured, confidential conversation with a trained therapist that helps you work through emotional, psychological, or relational difficulties. It can be short-term and focused on a specific issue, or longer-term work on patterns and identity. At Bridge for Families we offer psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families, children, and adolescents.

What's the difference between a psychotherapist and a psychologist?

Psychologists hold a doctoral degree and can diagnose mental health conditions. Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) and Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) — the credential most of our team holds — are regulated by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and provide psychotherapy but do not formally diagnose. For most therapy work — anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship support, grief — a Registered Psychotherapist is the appropriate fit.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on what you're working on. Some people find meaningful change in 6–12 sessions of focused work. Others stay longer for deeper, ongoing work. We start with a consultation to talk through your situation and figure out a realistic pace and starting point — there's no commitment to a long course of therapy.

Is psychotherapy covered by insurance?

Most extended healthcare plans in Ontario cover psychotherapy with a Registered Psychotherapist or Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), including Blue Cross, Canada Life, Manulife, Sun Life, and Veterans Affairs (VAC). Check your plan for "Registered Psychotherapist" coverage. We provide detailed receipts for reimbursement.

Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?

Yes. Our office is in Kanata at 430 Hazeldean Road, Unit 209. Sessions are available in-person at the clinic or via secure video. Most clients choose a mix depending on schedule and preference.

What should I expect in the first session?

The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, what you're hoping to work on, and a little about your history — nothing more than you're ready to share. Together you'll figure out a starting point and a realistic pace. There's no script you need to follow.

How do I choose which of your six therapists to see?

Start with what you're working through, then match it to a lane. Each therapist card on this page lists a "Best for" line and the approaches they use, so you can see at a glance who fits — Lee-Anne for family and couples, Tom for men's, anger, and grief, Phil for trauma and young adults, Melissa for youth anger, Katherine for somatic and youth anxiety, and Teanna for first responders, women's, and grief. If two feel close, that's normal — book a free 20-minute consultation with either and decide from there.

What if I'm not sure who's the right fit?

You don't have to get it perfect on your own. Book a free 20-minute consultation or call us, describe what's going on, and we'll suggest the therapist whose specialty best matches. Because everyone works under one roof at our Kanata clinic, picking a starting point carries no risk — if it isn't quite right, we'll help you find a better match.

Can I switch to a different therapist on your team later?

Yes, and it's common as needs change. Through our circle-of-care approach, you can move to another therapist on the team without starting over from scratch — your therapists coordinate so nothing gets lost in the handoff. If your teen needs their own person, or you and your partner each need support, we can pair you with different therapists in the same clinic.

Not Sure Where to Start?

A free 20-minute consultation is the easiest first step. We'll talk through what's going on and help you figure out who's the right fit.
